11.11.11 Send the Financial Accounting Foundation a Comment Letter Supporting an Independent Board for Private Company GAAP ModificationsThe AICPA is urging CPAs to immediately send a comment letter to the Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF) to help make financial reporting more relevant and less complex for millions of the nation’s businesses. CPAs are asked to respond to FAF’s Plan to Establish the Private Company Standards Reporting Council, released on October 4 for public comment, and express support for the Blue Ribbon Panel on Standard Setting for Private Companies’ recommendation that FAF create an independent board to set exceptions and modifications in U.S. GAAP for private companies. According to FAF’s proposal, decisions of the new council would have to be reviewed and approved by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), which FAF oversees.

9.16.11 Tax Strategy Patents Ban is Official — President Obama signed the bill this morning. Taxpayers have won a significant victory today with the enactment of the America Invents Act, a major patent reform measure that includes a provision to eliminate tax strategy patents fought for by the AICPA and individual state CPA societies. Several NVCPA Board members have been advocating this provision for years with personal visits, letters and emails to our elected federal officials. “This certainly is a day to celebrate the effectiveness of our on-going advocacy,” notes Carlene Gaydosh, current NVCPA representative of AICPA Council and a former President and Legislation Chairman of the Nevada Society of CPAs. “This passage of this provision was indeed a hard fought victory.” Read the AICPA Press Release here.

6.7.11 NV Legislature ends 76th Session — The Nevada Legislature ended its 76th Regular Session, while using every second during its 120-day time limit. The NVCPA has been monitoring the action and Legislature was able to pass the continuation of the sunset taxes, fund 10M for the Millennium scholarship, and much more.
Below are bills that the Nevada Society of CPAs has been following throughout the 76th Regular Session:

2.28.10 NVCPA writes to Senators — The NVCPA wrote Senators Reid and Ensign to urge their support for legislative efforts to stop the issuance of tax strategy patents. As the Senate begins debate on S. 23, comprehensive patent reform, the NVCPA asked that they specifically champion the provision related to stopping tax strategy patents, Section 14 of the bill. This pro-taxpayer provision is a critical component of patent reform legislation and the NVCPA urges them to oppose any effort to weaken or remove it. Read Letter to Reid

11.29.10 URGENT: The Nevada Society of CPAs received a notice from the Internal Revenue Service advising our members that joint filers with different last names should wait until December 6, 2010, to submit a PTIN application if:
Your last return was married filing jointly, you were the secondary spouse on the return, and you have a different last name than your spouse.
The IRS is addressing a system issue that has prevented joint filers with different last names from getting their PTIN. Please check the IRS website for updates.  The link is: http://www.irs.gov/taxpros/article/0,,id=210909,00.html

9.27.10 NVCPA writes to Congress members and Senators — The NVCPA wrote Congresswomen Berkley & Titus, Congressman Heller and Senators Reid and Ensign to encourage them to take action and repeal section 9006. This section imposes unreasonable and extremely burdensome Form 1099 reporting requirements on all business taxpayers, but particularly on small businesses. Read Sample Letter.

9.24.10 The NVCPA wrote Senator Reid to ask that he works to enact legislation prohibiting tax strategy patents before Congress adjourns later this month. There is simply too much at stake for taxpayers and their advisers to allow the patenting of tax planning methods to continue. Read Harry Reid letter.

8.20.10 The NVCPA congratuates the Honorable Dean Heller, who along with other members of congress, sent a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner expressing concerns over the IRS proposal to regulate paid income tax return preparers. See letter to Geithner. See NVCPA letter to Heller.

6.15.10 The NVCPA advocates support of Amendment 4342 of H.R. 4213 which discourages certain S corporation owners’ compensation be treated as wages subject to self-employment taxes (both the employer and the employee portions). We believe that Section 413 American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010 threatens to result in a significant increase in taxes and complexity for S corporations and their shareholders, and for certain limited partners. View the AICPA Letter to ALL U.S. Senators and the NVCPA Letter to Senator Reid and Senator Ensign
